Meeting of Srila Prabhupada with His Spiritual Master
His Divine Grace Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada was born in 1896 in Calcutta, India. HDG Prabhupada met his spiritual master Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Prabhupada in Calcutta in the year 1922.
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was a prominent Bhakti scholar and the founder-acharya of the sixty-four (64) branches of the Gaudiya Mathas. He liked this newly educated young man and convinced him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge to the western world.
Recognizing Srila Prabhupada's philosophical knowledge and devotion, the Gaudiya Vaishnava Society honored him with the title of 'Bhaktivedanta.' In 1950, Srila Prabhupada retired from married life at the age of 54, dedicating himself fully to study and writing.
Srila Prabhupada In Vrindavan
Srila Prabhupada went to Vrindavan where he lived in the historic medieval temple of Sri Sri Radha-Damodar in humble conditions.
In the temple, he spent most of his time in deep study and writing. He accepted sannyasa, the highest ashram, in 1959.
He began his masterpiece, a multi-volume commentary on the 18,000-verse Srimad-Bhagavatam. After completing the first three volumes, he departed for the USA in 1965.
Srila Prabhupada's Journey to the USA
In 1965, at age 69, Srila Prabhupada reached America after an arduous 37-day journey across the Atlantic. He arrived with no money, no contacts, and just a few boxes of books.
"Oh Krishna, I am so sure that if you have sent me there must be a plan... Make me dance the way you want me to dance."
Despite surviving two heart attacks at sea, his determination never wavered. He soon established ISKCON and began the global propagation of Krishna Bhakti.

Srila Prabhupada's most important contribution is his books. Highly respected by the academic community for their depth and clarity, they are used as standard textbooks in numerous colleges and universities worldwide.
